Barricading the Ice Sheets exhibition

A message from Oliver Ressler:

'Hi all,

I would like to inform you about the large solo exhibition “Barricading the Ice Sheets: Repossess the Plant, the Planet” at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial in Gijón (Spain) that will open on 27 January 2023.

“Barricading the Ice Sheets” is a research endeavour that investigates climate breakdown, the climate justice movements and the relation of the latter to the arts. The research materializes in different formats such as films, photographic work, a sculpture, a large-scale drawing, conferences and two publications.

The exhibition at LABoral is part of the “Barricading the Ice Sheets” exhibition cycle that started with an exhibition at Camera Austria, Graz, the research institution from where the project began (04.09. – 21.11.2021). The following solo show was at Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb (30.11.2021 – 06.02.2022), which stood out as it encompassed my entire artistic production focused on climate breakdown to this date, spanning 59 works from 1994 to 2021. Further configurations of "Barricading the Ice Sheets" were solo exhibitions at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), Berlin (04.06. – 31.07.2022) and Tallinn Art Hall, Tallinn (27.08 – 06.11.2022). Also these exhibitions differed from each other, as they included new works that were carried out within the project while the exhibition travelled. For the solo exhibition at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, Gijón (28.01. – 09.09.2023), the title was modified into "Barricading the Ice Sheets: Repossess the Plant, the Planet", highlighting the inclusion of a cycle of films on best-practice-struggles for worker-controlled workplaces in European factories. The four films “Occupy, Resist, Produce” (2014-2018) were carried out together with Dario Azzellini.

The exhibition series will be completed with a show at The Showroom, London (18.04. – 25.06.2023).
