Biodiesels may seem like a better option than fossil fuels when it comes to combatting global warming, but our current ways of sourcing them are proving just as unsustainable. As a recent Friends of the Earth report about the impacts of palm oil production found, "between 1985 and 2000, the development of oil-palm plantations was responsible for an estimated 87 per cent of deforestation in Malaysia." Such sourcing, removing the very forests which are such valuable sinks for carbon, only contributes to our problems. As George Monbiot writes of recent enthusiasm for Palm Oil, "The hard decisions have been avoided, and another portion of the biosphere is going up in smoke."
