Ending oil industry sponsorship of the arts
Last month, BP announced it was renewing its sponsorship deals with four iconic cultural institutions. Here is our response (first published by Hyperallergic):
First up, on Saturday 14th May, campaigners from Young Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland and Fossil Free QUB publicly presented a "Portrait of BP" - an image of an oil-drenched pelican - inside the Ulster Museum in Belfast, in protest at the museum's hosting of the BP Portrait Awards.
Today, the Art Not Oil coalition has published an in-depth report drawing upon hundreds of emails and documents released under the Freedom of Information Act, which exposes the multiple ways in which BP has interfered in the running of the museums and galleries it sponsors.
